Individuals involved in clinical research budgeting and billing such as principal investigators, clinical research coordinators, financial analysts and department administrators will benefit from this presentation.

Participants will learn the framework of clinical research financial management across the life of a study. Key requirements will be explained including Medicare Coverage Analysis (MCA), Protocol Billing Grids (PBGs), study visit registration and charge review, ePayment and participant reimbursement, invoicing, and available online tools and educational resources. The relevance of federal regulation, institutional policy, and study document consistency will be discussed.

Designed for clinical research personnel conducting financial feasibility of a study or negotiating contract language, this class will describe the purpose of a consistent billing plan and study procedure analysis.

The needs and requirements for document consistency and the Medicare Coverage Analysis (MCA) will be explained. Definitions of relevant terms and descriptions will be provided including “protocol billing grid,” “Standard of Care (SOC) costs,” and “routine costs.” The relationship of the MCA to federal regulation will be discussed.

This is class one of a three-class series. The content is geared towards researchers participating in intramurally, government, or industry funded clinical trials. In the class, we will begin with an overview of clinical research billing compliance to discuss the role it has in clinical trial budget development. Next, we will walk through typical clinical trial budget categories with the intention of beginning the process of creating a cost budget. Finally, we will discuss multi-center budget development key considerations. 

At the conclusion of this class, you should be able to:

  • Understand an overview of clinical research billing compliance.
  • Recognize why billing compliance plays an important role in clinical trial budget development. 
  • Identify budget categories and use them to create a cost estimate for site participation in a clinical trial.

The Clinical Research Budget Oversight course is class three of a three-class series. The content is geared towards researchers participating in intramurally, government, or industry funded clinical trials. In the class, we will begin with an overview of post-award financial management resources and requirements. Next, we will discuss clinical trial budget characteristics and suggestions for managing costs and revenue. Finally, we will outline data elements to be tracked for successful invoicing and reconciliation. 

At the conclusion of this class, you should be able to:

  • Recognize why clinical research billing compliance plays an important role in clinical trial budget oversight. 
  • Identify key individuals and capture necessary data elements. 
  • Maintain budget oversight and successfully complete post-award financial management.

This class will explain key budgeting concepts which will help you in developing your project proposal. You need to construct a comprehensive and accurate budget so that your proposal will be awarded and to guide you as you do the project. We will also discuss federal and University requirements regarding the application of costs.

At the conclusion of this class, you should be able to:

  • Differentiate between allowable and unallowable expenses for grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements
  • List federal and University requirements for appropriately applying, transferring, and modifying costs
  • Explain the principles of cost sharing, subcontracting, and matching funds
  • Construct an effective proposal budget including:
    • All categories of direct costs
    • Facilities and administrative (F&A) costs
  • Identify sources of additional information for accurately projecting costs

The Clinical Research Budget Negotiation course is class two out of a three-class series. The content is geared towards researchers participating in industry funded clinical trials. In the class, we will begin by discussing the importance of maintaining consistent practices and referencing University resources. Next, we will outline the process of creating a charge budget necessary to begin negotiations. Finally, we will go over examples, inhibitors, and tips to aid in completion of a successful budget negotiation. 

At the conclusion of this class, you should be able to:

  • Build a charge budget.
  • Understand the importance of consistent documentation.
  • Gather tips to successfully negotiate budgets with industry partners.

This presentation will examine the process of developing non-dilutive funding opportunities for commercialization and partnerships between industry and research institutions. Small Business Innovation in Research (SBIR) / Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant programs, participating agencies, company eligibility and requirements, and recent legislative updates will be discussed.

An overview of SBIR/STTR application procedures including required registrations will be provided. Relevant University policies will be explained, additional federal and state grants which support commercialization efforts will be reviewed (NSF GOALI, GOED, USTAR, etc.), and University Technology Venture and Commercialization (TVC) resources and services will be described.

 

 


BEST PRACTICE NETWORK-BPN (SELECT 1)

REd Best Practice Networks are 1 hour in length with a 15-minute presentation and a 45-minute discussion that are led by subject matter experts. They will be developed based on (1) requests from participants and (2) needs from units on campus. Participants are expected to come prepared with any questions that they may have and to engage in a conversation with the facilitator and their peers.

Classes may be completed in any order, but all classes need to be completed within 18 months from the first class that you plan to use for specific certificate.

Step 3. Submit Class Certifications

When all certificate requirements have been satisfied (classes have been attended), please upload all of the Class Completion Certifications to the assignments under the modules tab in this Canvas course with the corresponding class name. (Please see REd instruction)

Class Completion Certificates will be in your Canvas Catalog profile, under the Completed classes tab.

Step 4. REd Team Review

The Research Education Team will review all your class completion within 5 business days of requirement submission. After that, you will be able to view and print the certificate you have been awarded.
