The Research Education Department provides professional development opportunities for all faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars, students, and members of the University research community.The Research Administration Training Series (RATS) enables you to:

  • learn, develop and improve your job skills and performance
  • maintain an understanding of best practices and current methodologies
  • network with colleagues, share experiences

to increase your potential for advancement, keep yourself marketable in the broad field of research administration.

Research Education offers training and instruction through several delivery methods to support your individual professional development needs:

RATS Live Instructions are taught by subject matter experts, and provide both fundamental and advanced skills training. For our entire curriculum, here are all of the Classes by Title and our entire Canvas Catalog. To register for upcoming classes, click here to view our calendar.

Participants in the Certificate of Achievement program must attend live leture classes in order to earn initial certificate(s).

RATS Online Classes feature lessons and exercises designed to build competency and increase efficiency. Modules are accessible 24/7 and are all self-paced. All members of the University research community are invited to complete any online classes of interest.

Completed RATS Online Classes may only be applied toward Recertification of any previously awarded certificate.

The Research Administration Training Series (RATS) provides new and experienced research administrators an opportunity to learn about conducting research at the University of Utah.


Grant Writing Academy

The Grant Writing Academy (GWA) is an intensive, threeday program for faculty who are planning to submit proposals to federal, scientific institutes and agencies. The focus of the GWA is on best practices for development idea into a competitive proposal.
