This is a REd Best Practice Network (live) class.

Part 1: How to identify data elements and best practices for data collection from a statistician's perspective. Prior to planning data collection, it is helpful for researchers to perform a literature review, including a review of published tables and figures. This information can be used to guide the construction of a statistical analysis plan that includes mock-up tables and figures. After focusing on which data elements to collect, I'll discuss best practices for data collection.

Part 2: Writing a grant Research Design section through the eyes of a Study Coordinator. Most Clinical Research data collection tasks are delegated by the Principal Investigator to their Research Assistant or a Study Coordinator. We will review the key elements needed in a grant Research Design section that increase the likelihood of the successful completion of these tasks, thus protecting the data integrity.

Class Objectives:

  • Define mock-up table and statistical analysis plan and explain why they are important to research planning.
  • Define 3 best practices for data collection.
  • Define the key elements for the Research Assistant or Study Coordinator in the NIH Clinical Trial Protocol template
  • Articulate the purpose of a Study Calendar or Schedule of Activities

REd Best Practice Networks are 1 hour in length with a 15-minute presentation and a 45-minute discussion that are led by subject matter experts. They will be developed based on (1) requests from participants and (2) needs from units on campus. Participants are expected to come prepared with any questions that they may have and to engage in a conversation with the facilitator and their peers.
