Research Development is a set of strategic, proactive, catalytic and capacity-building activities designed to attract extramural research funding, create relationships, and develop and implement strategies that increase institutional competitiveness.
Class Objectives:
- including explaining the differences between research development & research administration
- the various ways in which Research Development Professionals support and contribute to the research enterprise

In this class, we will discuss Pivot-RP (not to be confused with the Pivot Center at the University of Utah). Pivot-RP is a University of Utah searchable database purchased by the VPR Office. Pivot-RP is used to identify funding opportunities and view scholarly profiles. It is freely available to all faculty, staff, and students at the University. Participants will learn:
- How to set up researcher profile and/or claim profile
- How to search Pivot for funding opportunities
- How to locate/network with researchers with common research interests
- New features and how to set up alerts and get help
- Tips and strategies for graduate students, new faculty at Utah, experienced researchers, and research administrators.

The Proposal Development NSF Writing and Editing Workshop aims to demonstrate the importance of proficient writing and composition. The session will cover differences between academic and grant writing, characteristics of effective grant writing, attributes of compelling grant proposals, and editing techniques to refine your grant writing. The workshop will also go over the elements of an NSF proposal and how to craft a well-structured research proposal.

Complex and Multi-PI grants are becoming more and more common among funders. This training will discuss the science of team science and the keys to a healthy collaboration.

NSF Portion:
This class provides an overview of NSF grant preparation for the Research Development professional.
At the conclusion of this class, you should be able to:

- Describe the mission and structure of NSF, and the types of research they fund
- Understand the two NSF merit criteria
- Search NSF proposal solicitations and awards
- Use the PAPPG
- Outline and develop an effective NSF proposal draft including Supplementary Documents
- Support a PI in building a competitive proposal
NIH Portion:
At the conclusion of this portion of class, you should be able to:

- Describe the mission and structure of NIH, and the types of research they fund
- Understand NIH investigator designations and the most common NIH mechanisms
- Search for NIH proposal solicitations and awards
- Use the SF424
- Outline and develop an effective NIH proposal draft including Supplementary Documents
- Support a PI in building a competitive proposal
CERTIFICATES
Step 1. Register for the Certificate Canvas Course you want to earn
Step 2. Complete Classes
Classes may be completed in any order, but all classes need to be completed within 18 months from the first class that you plan to use for specific certificate.
Step 3. Submit Class Certifications
When all certificate requirements have been satisfied (classes have been attended), please upload all of the Class Completion Certifications to the assignments under the modules tab in this Canvas course with the corresponding class name. (Please see REd instruction)
Class Completion Certificates will be in your Canvas Catalog profile, under the Completed classes tab.
Step 4. REd Team Review
The Research Education Team will review all your class completion within 5 business days of requirement submission. After that, you will be able to view and print the certificate you have been awarded.
Step 5. Get your Certificate!
Retrieve your certificate from Catalog.
An official hard copy of your certificate can be processed and delivered to a University
address upon request. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Research
Education at ResearchEducation@utah.edu.
All REd certificates are valid for three (3) years upon completion.
