National Science Foundation

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports competitive funding opportunities across all disciplines of science and engineering. Understanding NSF’s expectations, proposal requirements, and review criteria is essential to building a strong application. Research Education (REd) at the University of Utah provides centralized training and curated resources to help faculty, postdocs, and research staff prepare competitive NSF proposals. These trainings and resources center on NSF merit review criteria: Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts.

WHAT WE OFFER

Workshops & Classes

REd regularly offer classes on grant writing fundamentals, NSF-specific requirements, and strategies for developing compelling proposals.
See our current list of related classes below.

External Resources

We recommend reviewing NSF’s own training materials. While NSF does not publish funded proposals online, some universities and individuals do.
